Farm Animal
Haul-In Clinic
Coming to TVS!
We would like to add a haul-in facility for
farm animals to our practice in Turner (“Haul-in” meaning that some
of our farm animal patients would be brought to us, saving time and
money. This facility will also provide access to veterinary care to
farmers from a much wider area, which helps to fill a critical need
at this time.
We are seeking grass-roots funding for this
project, as an expression of support for area farmers and to
strengthen the prospects for young, large animal vets in this area.
By building this clinic without debt attached, we would be able to
offer lower cost services than if we have to seek traditional
funding. This is important, because we are talking about
food-producing and fiber-producing animals, which have limited
economic value, yet provide the very food on our plates. In
addition, this clinic will help to ensure that there will be
farm-animal veterinary care available in south-central Maine for the
next generation of farmers, and the next generation of farm animal
vets.
Food production -- in which the role of
veterinarians is so important -- is a concern in which society as a
whole needs to become engaged and participatory. If you would like
to help with a contribution to this endeavor, please click on the
"Donate" button below.
We would also be happy to hear from you if you
have grant-writing skills or other ideas about how we can make this
project successful. Let me know of your interest and I will be
happy to visit with you and provide you with our building plans and
budget needs.

CANINE INFLUENZA VACCINE NOW AVAILABLE!
There is a new disease out there for
our canine family members, canine influenza
virus. It seems that even our canine family
members are being plagued by mutating flu
viruses. The horse flu virus, which has
been around for over 40 years, has now
decided to infect dogs. Unfortunately, none
of our pets have natural immunity to this
virus. 80% of exposed dogs will develop
symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, or
pneumonia. 8% will die. One of the
most disturbing things about this virus is
that animals that are in the contagious
stage and shedding the virus, show no
symptoms. Infected dogs may not show signs
until after they are finished shedding the
virus to other dogs. Infectious dogs may
look perfectly normal, and act perfectly
normal, while spreading the disease to other
dogs. For that reason, vaccination is
really the only practical way of preventing
severe disease.
No
vaccine has been available until recently.
We now have one. Like human flu vaccine,
the vaccine will not completely protect pets
from infection, but if symptoms appear,
their severity is greatly reduced. It seems
an unnecessary risk for any dog that is
around other dogs at kennels, pet stores,
dog parks, grooming shops, dog trials, dog
shows and veterinary clinics not be
vaccinated. To facilitate protection
of your pet against canine influenza, Turner
Veterinary Service will have an introductory
cost of $30 for the series of 2 injections.
Two injections, two to four weeks apart, are
necessary to give immunity to the virus and
then once a year after that. Our
technicians will be happy to administer the
vaccine as long as a well pet exam has been
documented within the year. Appointments to
vaccinate your dog for canine influenza may
be made at any time by calling
207-225-2155.
Warning – Do not vaccinate pregnant females
